29 Kenyans eye glory at IPSC World Handgun Championships in South Africa

In preparation for the World Shoot, the Kenyan team last week participated in the IPSC Handgun Pre-World Shoot competition held at Bamburi Rifle Club (BRC) in Mombasa.
Kenya will be represented by a team of 29 athletes at the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) Handgun World Shoot Championship in Matlosana, South Africa, scheduled from September 11 to September 28.
The Kenyan squad features top shooters, including Ibrahim Ndungu, Issa Issa, Thomas Kiilu, Maurice Mureithii, Sunny Sian, and leading female shooter Agnes Wangeci Muchiiri, among others.
They will compete across divisions such as Open, Standard, Production, and Classic, which are defined by firearm type, equipment and scoring rules.
The championship, a Level V event and the highest in IPSC, challenges participants with multiple stages designed to test accuracy, speed, and tactical decision-making.
Shooters navigate obstacles and varied scenarios under strict time limits, with both individual and team scores contributing to overall rankings and global standings.
In preparation for the World Shoot, the Kenyan team last week participated in the IPSC Handgun Pre-World Shoot competition held at Bamburi Rifle Club (BRC) in Mombasa.
The four-day tournament, coordinated by the Kenya Sports Shooting Federation (KSSF) under IPSC regulations, saw 40 shooters take part, including members of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), National Police Service (NPS), Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and civilians holding valid firearm licenses.
The event began with range officer training on Thursday and Friday, before moving into the main shooting rounds on Saturday and culminating with the finals on Sunday. Competitors navigated 20 demanding stages which tested their precision, speed and tactical skills.
The exercise gave the Kenyan athletes valuable experience, sharpening their accuracy, speed, and tactical skills ahead of the global event.
"This prestigious tournament served as the official preparatory platform for the Kenyan National Shooting Team as they gear up for the forthcoming World Handgun Championship in South Africa," IPSC Regional Director Frank Ambundo, who will be leading the team in South Africa, said after the tournament.
"It is also not only about preparing Team Kenya for international competition, but also about showcasing Kenya's growing talent in shooting sports.
